Get up-to-speed on the latest guidelines for all types of rated walls!

This Standard has been completely revised to address the requirements for high challenge fire walls, and fire barrier walls. Particular focus has been given to introducing two levels of fire walls -- fire walls and high challenge fire walls. The difference is that a fire wall is not intended to provide the same level of protection and reliability as a high challenge fire wall.

In updating the 2006 NFPA 221 , the Technical Committee:

  • Created the new term "High Challenge Fire Walls" for walls that are intended to restrict fire losses to the limits associated with 'maximum foreseeable loss' values of the insurance industry
  • Changed the definition of "Fire Wall" to refer only to the vertical physical barrier that is used to create two separate buildings which aids in determining type of construction and maximum building size
  • Added a new chapter to cover design criteria of fire walls
  • Added a chapter that contains general information that applies to all three types of rated wall assemblies--high challenge fire walls, fire walls, and fire barrier walls
  • Revised appropriate chapters and sections within NFPA 221 to differentiate between provisions that apply to "high challenge fire walls" and those that apply to "fire walls"
  • Incorporated applicable provisions of NFPA 5000 ® on Opening Protectives and Penetrations
